The Characters:
Victor Frankenstein: The Protagonist and narrator for most of the story. While studying in Ingolstadt he creates a horrible monster which he immediately regrets. He keeps the creation a secret, and has feelings of guilt and shame at his creation and knows that the monster will ruin his life, and many others.
The Monster: Never named, the monster is eight feet tall, and hideously ugly. However, he is intelligent and sensitive. Through out the book the monster tries to make human connections but is shunned. This leads to feelings of abandonment and eventually leads him to seek revenge against Victor.
Robert Walton: An arctic seaman, who opens and closes the book with his letters. He hears and records Victors story and sends it back to his sister in England
Alphonse Frankenstein: Victors Father, who is sympathetic to his son, he teaches and reminds Victor through out the book about how important family is.
Elizabeth Lavenza: An orphan adopted by the Frankensteins, she is an extremely passive woman who waits for the affection and attention of Victor, and they eventually fall in love.
Henry Clerval: Victors childhood friend who nurses him back to health in Ingolstadt. He follows in Victors footsteps and studies to become a scientist. He is always cheerful, while Victor is always sad.
William Frankenstein: Victors youngest brother, he is killed by the monster in order for the monster to gain some revenge on Victor, this adds to the guilt Victor feels about creating the monster
Justine Moritz: Brought in and raised by the Frankenstein family when Victor is growing up, she is blamed for the murder of William.
Caroline Beaufort: Brought in by the Frankensteins, she later marries Alphonse. She dies of scarlet fever which she got from Elizabeth.
